The Passing of Sister Mary Christopher O’Toole

Dear Alumni, Faculty, Parents and Students:

It is with great sadness that we share with you news of the passing of Sr. Mary Christopher O’Toole earlier this morning.  Like all the Sisters, she gave her life to Catholic education, more than 55 of hers to the students of St. Mary’s/Kennedy Catholic.  We ask your prayers for the repose of her soul, as well as for the Sisters of the Divine Compassion and the O’Toole Family, at this most difficult time.

**update**

It is with deep sadness that I write you with news of the passing of a St. Mary’s/Kennedy Catholic icon, Sr. Mary Christopher O’Toole, earlier this morning.  For my part, I can tell you that there wasn’t a person who worked with her that wasn’t better for the experience.  I imagine her students over the years undoubtedly feel the same.  She will be deeply missed.

Sincerely,
Alex Malecki

I often have thought of her as I tackle a math problem. She was a brilliant mathematician and a remarkable leader as we left Saint Marys’ in Katonah behind and moved into JFK High School. Blessings and prayers are with her as she goes home to her lord and savior..

Although uncompromisingly tough with us as students, Sister Christoper always got us to do our best – she expected nothing less, and worked tirelessly with each one of us to help us achieve our best. Her tough exterior belied a very tender, loving and kind-hearted person, whose lessons have served all those whose lives she touched well beyond the Math classroom. Thank you, Sister Christopher – Godspeed.

I was a young teacher at Kennedy. I remember Sr. Christopher telling me, “Don’t be afraid to lay the law down, even if you are teaching religion!” I’m sure I stared at her first and then we both laughed! Rest in the Lord’s peace, Sr. Christopher.

I had the pleasure of having sister Mary Christopher as a Math teacher in the leate 60′s, early 70′s. She was lots of fun (she knew who the troublmakers were, myself included).
    May you rest in peace.

Family and friends will miss this very special teacher and friend. I was fortunate to have Sister Christopher as a math teacher. She guided her students with an iron hand and laughter. I remember her smiling face and learned many aspects of math that have helped me through Medical School and my residency as a pediatrician. I feel blessed to have known her.

Sr. Christopher was a wise and kind woman whose love for people spread like ripples through the water touching the lives of so many over 55 years. She was kind to me when I taught English and worked as a guidance counselor. I will never forget her. She could be tough and she could be gentle, but she was always filled with love. Heaven is a happier place today with Christopher there. Bless you !

Sister Christopher brought so much to JFK and really advanced the mathematics ability of all students. She shaped and molded so many of us. She now rests with Christ the Lord.

Sorry to hear of Sr. Mary Christopher’s passing. She was a very generous and beneficial influence on my life at a very difficult time for me. It’s sad how we never seem to appreciate those who guide and help us until much, much later.
