Boys’, girls’ basketball both deepen playoff runs with big wins

Kennedy continues Catholic League success

The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each extended their seasons over the past two days with wins over Moore Catholic and St. Joseph’s Hill Academy, respectively, adding to the already strong finishes by the boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and volleyball teams.

On Tuesday the boys toppled Moore Catholic, 64-37, in an opening round match-up.  Sophomore Dom Cristiano led the way with 21 points, while senior Danny Cruz added 10.  The seventh-seeded Gaels will face Xavier on Saturday, March 1, at 1:45 p.m. at Bishop Ford High School.  Kennedy lost to second-seeded Xavier twice in regular season, but head coach Al Morales said the slate is wiped clean in the playoffs.

“They are a well-coached team with seasoned players,” Morales acknowledged, “but this is a new season and anything can happen.”

Last night the No. 3 seed Lady Gaels also took care of business with a 26-point victory over St. Joseph’s Hill Academy, 56-30.  The trio of Leah Greene, Kiera Hennessy and Tara Heslin-Scott combined for 38 points and 35 rebounds.  Greene ’14 led the way with 17 points, 11 boards and added six steals to the mix.  Next up was Hennessy ’14 with 14 points, and Heslin-Scott ’15 with seven; each pulled down a dozen boards apiece.

The Lady Gaels will play Moore Catholic this Friday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Spellman High School.  If they win, they will play for the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) title on Sunday at 5 p.m.  Coach Lance DeMarzo said Wednesday’s victory already qualified the girls for the CHSAA state tournament, so if they lose to Moore, they will play Sunday at 3 p.m. to determine seeding for that tourney.
