Kennedy varsity girls basketball defeats Carmel

Kennedy Catholic’s varsity girls basketball team earned its first win of the season in its home opener by defeating visiting Carmel 56-43 on Monday, December 1.

Senior captain Tara Heslin-Scott scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half and was on fire from 3-point range. Fellow senior captain Grace Cunningham had a strong all around game with 20 points, five rebounds, five steals and two blocks. Megan Weidenhamer, another senior captain, added 10 points.

The game was tied 20-20 at halftime but the Gaels outscored the Rams 16-8 in the third quarter behind three 3-pointers from Heslin-Scott to take a 36-28 lead into the final quarter.

Carmel fought back valiantly but solid decision making and free throw shooting sealed the win for the Gaels down the stretch.

Kennedy (1-2) returns to the court when it travels to Monsignor Scanlan in the Bronx for a 5:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, December 3.
