Kennedy defeats St. Edmund’s in hoops

Kennedy Catholic’s varsity boys basketball team defeated host St. Edmund’s 55-45 on Sunday, Jan. 25 to improve its undefeated record to 16-0.

Sean Delaney paced the Gaels with 20 points, while Elijah Hughes added 13 points.

The Gaels’ next contest is Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. at Cardinal Spellman in the Bronx.

Melikian captures Westchester County title

Kennedy Catholic junior Alex Melikian won the 182-pound title at the Westchester County Championships at Yonkers High School on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Melikian scored a 13-3 majority decision victory over Harrison’s Dom Schepis in the final.

Kyle Davis placed fifth at 145 pounds with a pin of Sleepy Hollow’s Kevin Borden at 2:19. Eddie Longest was sixth at 220 pounds.

JV girls hoops tops Scarsdale, Newburgh

Kennedy Catholic’s JV girls basketball team improved its impressive record to 14-2 with wins over Scarsdale and Newburgh.

The Gaels defeated Newburgh 49-22 on Monday, Jan. 19. Emily Girolamo paced the team with 14 points. Theresa Redendo and Emily Schidrich added nine points apiece.

On Saturday, Jan. 17 Kennedy bested Scarsdale 47-39 behind 26 points from Schidrich.

“Schidrich was on fire,” JV coach Len Yearwood said. “She made every big shot we needed.”

Bernadette O’Donnell added nine points in the victory.

The varsity squad fell to Newburgh 57-32 on Jan. 19. Megan Weidenhamer contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Grace Cunningham (10 points) and Hannah Callaghan (nine points) also chipped in offensively.

Kennedy fell to Scarsdale 50-31 on Jan. 17. Tara Heslin-Scott (13 points), Weidenhamer (10 points, eight rebounds) and Cunningham (eight points, 10 rebounds) were the main three contributors.

Both the JV and varsity will travel to Maria Regina on Friday, Jan. 23 with the JV starting at 5:00 and the varsity to follow at 6:45.

Gaels edge Xavier on hardwood

Kennedy Catholic’s varsity boys basketball team defeated host Xavier 68-59 on Monday, Jan. 19 to improve its unbeaten record to 15-0.

Junior Dom Cristiano sparked the Gaels with a game-high 25 points. Elijah Hughes and Sean Delaney each added 15 points, while Malachi de Sousa netted 11 points.

The Gaels will travel to Nazareth (Brooklyn) for an 8 p.m. contest on Friday, Jan. 23.

Unbeaten Gaels crush McClancy, move to 14-0

Kennedy Catholic cruised past host Monsignor McClancy 81-51 on Thursday, Jan. 15 to improve its unbeaten record to 14-0.

The Gaels featured balanced scoring with five players in double figures and were led by Elijah Hughes’ 21 points. Malachi de Sousa (15 points), Sean Delaney (14 points), Jordan Wright (12 points) and Dom Cristiano (10 points) also reached double digits in scoring.

Kennedy will return to action when they travel Fordham Prep on Sunday, Jan. 18 for a 7 p.m. game. The next day they’ll be on the road again when they face Xavier at 4 p.m.

Kennedy rocks Salesian in boys hoops

Another game, another convincing victory for the Kennedy Catholic varsity boys basketball team.

The unbeaten Gaels moved to 13-0 with a resounding 80-61 win over visiting Salesian on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Dom Cristiano paced the Gaels with a double-double, totaling 20 points and 10 rebounds. Elijiah Hughes added 19 points and eight boards. Sean Delaney (13 points, six rebounds) and Malachi de Sousa (12 points, six rebounds) were also important contributors in the win.

The Gaels jumped out to a 43-26 lead at halftime and were up 65-43 after three quarters.

Kennedy will travel to Monsignor McClancy on Thursday, Jan. 15 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Melikian shines at Eastern States Wrestling Tournament

Kennedy Catholic junior Alex Melikian came in fifth place at Eastern States Wrestling Classic over the weekend at 182 pounds. Eastern States, which takes place at Sullivan Community College, is considered one of the most prestigious wrestling tournaments in the Northeast.

Melikian came in unseeded and upset the fifth seed early in the tournament. He later defeated Hauppage’s Marcus Bisono 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals, before falling in the semifinals. Melikian then defeated Bisono again 5-0 in the fifth-place match.

Wrobel takes third at wrestling tourney

The Kennedy wrestling team participated in the Chris Hernandez Memorial Tournament in Yonkers along with 22 other teams from New York City up to Dutchess county.

Freshman Jack Wrobel came in third place at 120 pounds. He pinned White Plains’ Byron Xelo in 52 seconds in the third place bout.

Gaels keep rolling with two more wins in boys hoops

With two more wins under its belt, the Kennedy Catholic varsity boys basketball team improved its unbeaten record to 12-0.

The Gaels hosted St. Joseph’s-by-the Sea and cruised to a 73-43 victory on Sunday, Jan. 11. St Joseph’s is ranked No. 17 in the state in Class A, while the Gaels are No. 7.

Elijah Hughes and Dom Cristiano paced the Gaels in the win, scoring 23 points apiece. Sean Delaney added 11 points, while Malachi de Sousa netted nine points.

On Friday, Jan. 9, Kennedy traveled to Moore Catholic and earned an 87-30 victory behind 19 points from A.J. Morales and 16 points from Delaney. Cristiano and Hughes contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Gaels return to action when they host Salesian tomorrow night at 7:30. The freshman squad will take on Salesian at 4:30 with the JV playing at 6:00.

Hughes leads Kennedy past Scanlan in boys hoops

Kennedy Catholic’s varsity boys basketball team defeated visiting Monsignor Scanlan 83-60 behind 28 points and 12 rebounds from junior stand-out Elijah Hughes.

Sean Delaney netted 21 points, while Dom Cristiano added 14 points in the victory.

The unbeaten Gaels, who are ranked seventh in the state in Class A, improved to 10-0.

Kennedy’s contest at Moore Catholic tonight is postponed, but the Gaels return to action on Sunday, Jan. 11 when they host St. Joseph’s by-the-Sea at 3:30 p.m.
