Two Kennedy seniors earn Girl Scout Gold Awards

Susanna Cohen of Troop 10496 and Alexandria Kleinschmidt of Troop 1272, both seniors at Kennedy Catholic, earned their Girl Scout Gold Awards, the Girl Scout equivalent of Eagle Scout.

For Cohen’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, she created a new website for St. Aloysius – a preschool, convent, and retreat center in Hopewell Junction. According to Cohen, the website had not been updated since 2006. After completing the website, www.st-aloysius.org, she taught younger Girl Scouts what she had learned by hosting workshops for Brownies to earn a Computer Expert badge.

The goal of Kleinschmidt’s project was to encourage and facilitate senior citizens getting out of their house and being active. She worked with the president and board of the Jefferson Village Condo Association and organized a ‘Senior’ Prom for approximately 200 senior citizens. Kleinschmidt also hosted smaller events, such as baking for the seniors and watching a movie with them.

“It was an extremely rewarding project,” Kleinschmidt said. “I had the chance to meet many seniors whose ages ranged from the 60s to the high 90s. Many of the seniors expressed a lot of gratitude for my project. The conversations I had with them and their appreciation was truly rewarding.”

Kennedy Varsity Volleyball Begins a New Season

Kennedy Catholic Varsity Volleyball – Pre-Season Press Release – September 1, 2014

Kennedy Catholic Varsity Volleyball begins a new season with a new coach and five returning players.  Coach Tony Santora has taken on the responsibility of coaching varsity after coaching JV for the last few years.  The team graduated five members last year, so the rising seniors will be taking the lead on the court.  Kelly Gallagher continues in her fourth year as setter.  Mary Burns will start as outside hitter.  Katelynn Ryan will be the starting middle blocker and Mary Helen Baudinet will play right side.  Johanna Weidenhamer has joined varsity and will play middle block.

Megan Erb, will continue to play as libero and defensive specialist.  She will be joined by juniors – Teresa Divino (L), Francesca Del Monte (S),  Sondra Montague (S), Laurunce Rosenthal (RS/DS) and Gianna Vesce (MB).

Also joining varsity this year are sophomores – Alana Dinelli (DS), Danielle Kralik (OH), Tara Cooney (RS) and Caroline Tompkins (L/DS).  Joining their sisters in their first year at Kennedy are Annie Burns (OH/RS) and Meagan Gallagher (DS/L).  These younger players had a strong showing this summer at the Grass Doubles Tournament.  Annie Burns went to the semi-finals, Caroline Tompkins’ team came in second and Meagan Gallagher’s team took first place for the second year in a row (B Division).

After dominating in their respective Catholic grammar schools, it is wonderful to see the love of volleyball continue at Kennedy.  Six members of the team played for St. Patrick’s School – Bedford which won the Catholic Youth League Championship this spring.  Other players come from St. Augustine’s in Ossining and St. Patrick’s – Yorktown.  St. Theresa’s in Briarcliff Manor, which closed a couple of years ago, always enjoyed a strong volleyball program and has contributed several players to the Kennedy squad over the years.

The team is looking forward to a promising season competing in the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association and playing their neighboring schools in the Panas, Yorktown and Millbrook tournaments.  This will be the team’s second year in the NYCHSAA.  The team hopes to continue their progress and compete in the NYCHSAA state championships in November.

The first match will be on September 3rd at Mary Louis Academy in Queens.  The first home game is Friday, September 5th against Molloy.  The team hopes to see you there!
