Class Policy

Respect – It is my hope to give you and your classmates a great deal of freedom to express your ideas, opinions, concerns, and allow you to debate each other and yes, even debate Mrs. McGown. However, with freedom comes responsibility – If you are to be treated as adults you must behave as adults. Respect each other!

Attendance- All students will adhere to KCHS policy.  It is your responsibility to find out what you missed while absent; it is up to you to arrange to make up the work missed. This includes lecture notes, homework, tests, in-class activities, or whatever else was missed. Missed tests and quizzes must be made up within 1 week of each absence. If you fail to make up any missed work within 1 week a 0 grade will be entered into Power School. – No exceptions.

Tardiness – Coming late to class is disrupting to other students and is disrespectful. You will receive one free tardy, after that you will be given a Detention for each late arrival.

Cheating and Plagiarism – Don’t do it! Fair warning – you and whoever is involved will receive a zero for the work, quiz, test, etc.

Late AssignmentsI DO NOT ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS! No exceptions!! Extra Credit – There will be no extra credit in this class.

Homework – Much of your homework will involve reading from the textbook, workbook, reader and handouts. Each student should use the Guided Reading HW sheets provided by me to help them complete the HW and read each section. You will be held responsible for all readings assigned.

Quality of Work – All assignments will be evaluated on completeness, neatness, grammatical usage, structural organization, content, and adherence to specific requirements. Proofread all assignments – use spell and grammar checks on your computer. Review the instructions frequently to make sure you hand in high quality work that shows your understanding of the material.

Class Participation – Discussion and the exchange of ideas is crucial for you to gain an understanding of the time periods covered in this class.

Quizzes – Quizzes will and will not be announced. An unannounced quiz will be given if I sense you are coming to class unprepared.

Exams – Exams will be given every 3rd week on a Thursday. Students will know well in advance what material will be covered. The dates of the exams are listed above.  You will not be allowed to use notes or any other material during exams. Once you have taken an exam, that grade will stand. For this reason it is extremely important that you devote adequate time studying for tests.

After School Help:  will be held every Tuesday, following the last bell until 3:30 – 3:45. I highly encourage each student to never miss an after school test review. If you are absent the day of the review you will still be expected to take the exam with the rest of the class.  If Tuesdays are not convenient please see me.

Notebooks- I suggest you keep a folder for each unit (8) and loose leaf paper for writing – I will not accept paper from a spiral notebook! Folders and/or notebooks should include reading and lecture notes, homework assignments, handouts, papers, exams, and quizzes.  NEVER throw anything out because you will need this information to study for your mid-term and final exam. There is a workbook and an outside reader associated with the text that are available for purchase on the virtual school store on the KCHS website.

How Will You Be Graded?

Grades are weighted as follows:

1. 50% Test scores

2. 25% quiz scores

3. 25% Homework
