Varsity Girls Basketball Season ’10-‘11: Written by Erin Joyce (Class of 2012)
Last season, the Kennedy Catholic’s girl’s varsity basketball team finished off their season 17-4 losing to Irrivington in the semi-finals at the County Center. Kennedy surprised many when they won league with their aggressive, experienced team. This season the Gaels lost eight seniors and only have two returning varsity players. With a squad made mostly of juniors, Kennedy is going to have a developing year. But never doubt Head Coach Al Morales as he has worked his magic before. He has only been at Kennedy Catholic for two seasons and has completely transformed the girls’ basketball program, with the help of two well-known assistant coaches, Joe Cosenza and Marshall Reiff. This year, the program also gained a new JV Coach, Sunnie Killenn who will play a major role in helping shape the future for Kennedy’s girl’s basketball teams. Together, the coaching staff has become a trip threat.
With a tough season coming ahead with opponents such as Carmel, Peekskill, and Ossining the Gaels will be faced with challenging season. The team will turn to senior Natalie Candarelli, who has played for Coach Al for the last two years and sophomore, Shayna Gaskins who played varsity last year. The top new comers for the Gaels include guards Leah Greene, who is only freshman, and junior, Tara Cremin and forward Marina Cotarelo. We can only wait to see what the mixture of a young team, speed, and motivation to continue last year’s success will bring the Kennedy Catholic Girls Basketball team this season.
