League Champion Baseball Gaels Home Opener April 11 vs. Mahopac

Every team works and plays hard.  If you’re a Gael, that’s a given.  But when you play for multi-Coach-of-the-Year-award-winner Bob Fletcher, working hard can take on a whole new meaning.

For his Gaels, that means manning the Winter Clinic held at the school throughout January and February for ballplayers 14 and under.  For the attendees, it means top-notch instruction as Fletcher is able to bring in college coaches from across the country. Adelphi, Amherst, Boston College, Concordia, Iona, St. Thomas Aquinas, SUNY Purchase and Wake Forest, among others, all joined the Gaels in instructing local youth on how to hit, pitch and field with the area’s best. And for the Kennedy kids, it’s as rewarding an experience as the victories they’ve compiled over the years.

But the work doesn’t stop there.  You’ve heard the expression, “digging a hole” for one’s self; perhaps referring to a pitcher who has loaded the bases and must pitch out of a jam.  Well, during Easter Recess, the Gaels found themselves digging ditches and laying the groundwork for a new scoreboard for their new diamond. Visible from Route 138, the scoreboard is a result of the generosity of several munificent Kennedy families, with wiring courtesy of alumni parent Billy Hines ’71,P’11,’12 of Hines Electrical.

After all this offseason work, you can bet the Gaels are itching to light up their new scoreboard–figuratively and literally–during their home opener on Thursday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m. against Mahopac.  The Gaels opened their season on April 7, with a 7-3 victory at host Mamaroneck, followed by a 0-1 loss at Walter Panas on April 9.
