Hockey team wins two of three to start year

Kennedy’s varsity ice hockey squad started the season with a bang, winning two out of its first three games last weekend in the Thanksgiving IceBreaker Tournament at Brewster Ice Arena.

The Gaels started off the season with a 7-3 win over Fox Lane behind three goals from Mike Isola on November 28.

Gerard Martirano, Ronnie LaSonde, Griffin Ferreira and Andrew Homola each added one goal apiece. Leonard Flocco made 13 saves in net.

The next day Kennedy fell to Brewster 6-4 in a nail-biter. Up until the final minute, Kennedy trailed 5-4 until they pulled their goaltender and Brewster scored an empty netter to seal the win. Martirano had three goals and an assist.

Kennedy bounced back on November 30 with a commanding 9-2 victory over Lakeland/Panas. Griffin Ferreira notched a hat trick to spark the Gaels. Ostap Pryjdun had two goals in the win. Salvatore Grasso and Martirano each dished out two assists. Flocco made 18 saves.

Nine different players scored for the Gaels (2-1) over the three-game stretch.

The team returns to the ice when it takes on Byram Hills on Thursday, December 4 at 9 p.m. on the Pond at Brewster Ice Arena.
