Kennedy Catholic maintains a chapter of the National Honor Society known as the St. Mary’s Chapter. The chapter is named after our predecessor school, St. Mary’s in Katonah.
The National Honor Society was formed in 1921. It recognizes students who exhibit the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Scholarship is demonstrated by maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 93.0. In addition, the other qualities are described as follows on the National Honor Society website:
Service: This quality is defined as the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, without direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service;
Leadership: Student leaders are often viewed as those students who are resourceful, good problem solvers, involved in and promoters of school activities, idea contributors, dependable, and who are both organized and organizers;
Character: The student of good character can be said to be one who upholds principles of morality and ethics; is cooperative and responsible; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and is a good citizen.
Students with the necessary cumulative grade point average are eligible to apply for membership in the St. Mary’s Chapter of the National Honor Society by submitting an Information Packet, which explains the basis on which they believe they have demonstrated the necessary service, leadership and character to gain admission to the National Honor Society. (The Information Packet can be found at the link at the bottom of this page.) Decisions on applications are made by a Faculty Council, consisting of five members and chaired by the Chapter Advisor. The current Chapter Advisor is Mr. Zawiski, Dean of Men.
The induction ceremony for the St. Mary’s chapter of the National Honor Society is typically held during either the last week of November or the first week of December. At the ceremony, new members are introduced by the existing senior members, who relate the various achievements of their incoming colleagues. The ceremony is held in the Auditorium at Kennedy Catholic High School, and it is followed by a reception in the school’s Lakeview Room.
Students inducted into the St. Mary’s Chapter of the National Honor Society are required to provide in-school tutoring to other Kennedy Catholic students. Tutoring assignments are made by the Chapter Advisor. In addition, members of the National Honor Society are expected to continue to exhibit the necessary qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and character in order to maintain their membership in the National Honor Society.
