Remembering – Shrek the Musical

Sophia Lombardi, grade 9

From February 28th to March 2nd, Shrek the Musical was brought to life on the Kennedy stage.
Each performance was unlike the other in the best way possible, unique to each player’s own
emotions each night. With hilarious characters, vibrant costumes, and catchy tunes, Shrek was an
endlessly rewarding musical. Every person in the cast and crew worked tirelessly to put it all
together. But at the center of it all was a community of people who poured their hearts into their
work.

There is something so special about opening night. For performers, it’s not quite like any other
feeling. Even just standing backstage, you can feel the energy from everyone’s excitement and
nerves. Then, the music starts, the curtain rises, and the lights hit you. All of a sudden, your
nerves are gone, having turned into a sort of adrenaline. Suddenly, you are transformed into your
designated character. The crowd awes and laughs throughout the show – a beautiful reminder as
to why we choose theatre. For the performers, being up on stage is a chance to be authentically
raw, as we all put everything we have into our performances.

Shrek was made infinitely more enjoyable for the players because of the bonds developed
between each cast member and character. “In the beginning,” September and October, most
players were unfamiliar with each other, but by showtime, all were incredibly close.

There is a very special tradition that the cast likes to call “Chapel.” Before each performance, all
would gather in our school chapel to pray and reflect on the journey that brought us to that
particular performance. During this sacred time, we’d pray, share, laugh, or cry, and reminisce on
what brought us to this moment. In that space, we embraced our vulnerability and invited God to
be with us in our memories, in our moment, and throughout our performance.

Special thanks to the directors, administration, teachers, crew members, and the many parent
volunteers who made Shrek possible. We especially honor and thank Barbara Rue, Chloe Bodt,
Annette Di Grandi, Mrs. Boston, Mrs. Abbamont, and the incredible orchestra for their
commitment and belief in every one of us!
