Basketball Powers Through Playoffs

Girls Basketball

The Lady Gaels headed into the Semi-Final game as the #4 seed in the Tier 2 CHSAA playoffs on Thursday February 22, 2024. Standing between them was the #1 seed and 14th ranked team in NYS, St. Joseph Hill Academy out of Staten Island led by League MVP Tara Murphy. The Gaels had defeated Maria Regina in Round 1 and were up for the task. Led by Senior Captains Madi Lopez, Gianna Carlo, and Madison Carlo the Gaels were able to keep it close and trailed by 4 at halftime. With some timely shooting, clutch free throws, and great defense, the Gaels took a 4 point lead with under 3 minutes to go. St. Joe Hill standout Tara Murphy hit a 3 pointer to close the deficit to 1 point with under a minute to play. After a made free throw by Gianna Carlo, the Gaels led by 2 with 12.9 seconds. St. Joe Hill inbounded the ball with Murphy hurling up a runner that missed followed by an offensive rebound and another good luck that bounced out, Madison Carlo was able to corral the rebound and the Gaels held on to a 55-53 win! Their next game will be for the Arch-Diocesan Championship against Moore Catholic (of Staten Island) on Sunday February 25th at 3PM at Monsignor Farrell High School.

Boys Basketball

The Gaels headed into the 1st round of playoffs as the #6 seed in the CHSAA B Division playoffs on Wednesday February 21, 2024. They faced #4 seed and defending CHSAA B champions Moore Catholic of Staten Island. With the score tied at 47 with under a minute to go, sophomore Sebastian Jackson broke the tie with a go ahead layup. After another big stop, junior Mike Cunningham sunk his free throws to extend the lead to 3 points. With one final defensive stop, the Gaels held onto their lead to solidify their upset of the defending champs. Their next game is the Semi-Final against #2 seed St. John’s Prep on Sunday February 25th at 1pm at Fordham Prep.
