Cardinal Dolan Appoints Father Vaillancourt “Censores Librorum”

Kennedy Catholic Prep President and Principal Father Mark Vaillancourt is one of four clergy members who has been appointed by His Eminence Cardinal Dolan as censores librorum. In canon law, this role serves as an ecclesiastical authority responsible for reviewing texts for doctrinal accuracy and granting the certification of nihil obstat.

According to the Catholic New York article on the subject, Cardinal Dolan wrote in his appointment letters, ““This favorable declaration is given by an individual who has the knowledge, orthodoxy and prudence necessary for passing a moral judgment on a publication.”

Father Vaillancourt will now assist the bishop in overseeing authorization of written works that deal with faith and morality. He and the other censores librorum members will assess theological texts like prayer books and catechetical texbooks to ensure that they are true and accurate representations of Church doctrine. Once they have offered their declaration of nihil obstat, Cardinal Dolan grants his imprimatur – “let it be printed.”
