Kennedy Presidents asks Courage & Compassion for Newtown Community

Alumni, Parents, Friends and Visitors,

Courage and Compassion.

I ask that you remember those words in the days and weeks ahead, because that’s what we are going to need as a community and as a nation.

But as we struggle with the unthinkable loss in Newtown, Connecticut, it is our call to think and pray as a people of faith. For the only truth of any consequence, is that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. And He has charged each of us to help bring about His Kingdom. Not in some far away place. Not in a time yet to come. But here and now.

We must have the Courage to look past this heinous tragedy to ensure that these stories, which are becoming all too familiar, become a thing of the past. And we can start with prayer, the kind of prayer that whatever your religious affiliation, empowers communities of faith to build and strengthen the geographical communities they call home.

Those communities are coming together today. And the thoughts and prayers of the entire Kennedy Catholic community are with them in solidarity as they ask our Almighty Father for eternal rest for the victims of this senseless tragedy, healing for their families, and strength for the communities whose pursuit of life, liberty and happiness was weakened yesterday.

They will not carry this cross alone. We will be with them in prayer, and we will take action; as the needs of Newtown are made known, I will be meeting with our administrators and Student Government to find ways we can help meet them.

We will comfort our students, your children, as they come to grips with the news of the past day. We will teach them how to act with Courage and Compassion, even in the face of such violence. We will show them how we all can do the very thing our God calls us to do. Love.

Courage and Compassion is the legacy that has been entrusted to us. It is our duty to share that legacy now, so that those future generations of Gaels will be able to do what too many families in Newtown now cannot, and share it with their children.

“God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change. The courage to change the things that we can. And the wisdom to know the difference.”

Amen.

With you in prayer,
Rev. Mark G. Vaillancourt, Ph.D
President/Principal
