Kennedy wrestling earns first dual meet win

Kennedy Catholic’s varsity wrestling team earned its first dual meet win in recent memory by defeating Salesian 66-24 on December 9 at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School.

The Gaels tallied 10 wins by pin in the match. Pat Anderson, Kyle Davis, Brian Devey, Christian Fonteboa, Jimmy Longest, Eddie Longest, Alex Melikian, James Peterman, Jack Wrobel and Matt Keller each picked up a pin.

“All of our athletes wrestled very strongly in our team’s first ever dual meet team victory,” Gaels coach John Degl said. “We all battled well and found a way to win by fall. Each member had the knowledge that we had five weights we had to forfeit and we all wanted bonus points to help make up ground. I’m very pleased with everyone’s performance on the mat. We have made strong technical gains.”

In their second match, the Gaels fell to Monsignor Farrell. Davis gave the returning Catholic school state champion a scare, but fell 11-9.

“Kyle had several leads but one scramble went against us and that was the difference in the match,” Degl said.

Kennedy has a home meet tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Somers Sports Arena (245 Route 100).
